Even if you color your hair at the maximum allowed frequency, you might still have to deal with color fading or changing before your next coloring appointment. However, fading isnât always inevitable, and you can always postpone it with a few great tips.
Find out how to get longer lasting hair color by using the right products and developing the right habits to keep your shade vibrant for longer. From the preparation before coloring to the way you shower, hereâs what you can do to extend the life of your color.
1. Always Use a Clarifying Shampoo Before Coloring
If you donât get rid of all the product build-up before you color your hair, you really canât expect it to last. Use a clarifying shampoo twice in the week before youâre getting your hair colored in order to make sure that the color will stick to each hair for longer.
2. Only Use Hair Products for Colored Hair
This seems like a no-brainer for anyone who wants to get longer lasting hair color, but few make sure to always travel with their shampoo for colored hair or wonder if the hair mousse theyâre using is good for the color. Your shampoo and conditioner have to be color safe, but any product that goes on your hair should be carefully considered.
3. Aim for Less Frequent Shampooing
Even with the gentlest shampoo for color hair, you still need to avoid exposing your hair to shampoo daily. Try co-washing, with a color safe conditioner, and consider dry shampoo as a solution for feeling fresh without stripping away too much color. There are two types of shampoos for colored hair, and you might need to experiment with both before deciding which works best for your color.
4. Try Color Depositing Shampoos
One way to get longer lasting hair color is to use color depositing shampoos. With strong pigments among their ingredients, they deposit a little color on your hair during each use. Of course, this type of shampoo can actually alter your hair color if you donât find the perfect match. To reduce the risk of that happening, stick to a color depositing shampoo from the same line as your preferred hair dye.
5. Experiment with Color Lock Shampoos
The other type of great shampoo for colored hair locks the color on the hair strand without adding anything. It may be a right choice for you, especially if you have a vibrant shade, either red or less natural colors. Again, going for a color safe shampoo that locks pigment from the same brand as your hair dye is probably the best choice.
6. Deep Condition Weekly
A color safe conditioner is a must after every wash, but if you really want to get longer lasting hair color, then a deep conditioning treatment is recommended once a week. Hydrating masks are a good choice, as long as theyâre safe for colored hair. Keeping your tresses moisturized with conditioner also provides a benefit when it comes to vibrant and long lasting color.
7. Check the Water
Exposing your hair to chlorinated water in pools is definitely a bad idea. If you have to, make sure you soak it before going into the pool. However, the water you use when youâre washing your hair is even more important. Invest in a shower head that purifies water and removes any color-dulling minerals. And forget about washing your colored hair with warm or hot water. Using cold water helps prevent color fading better, but if thatâs not an option, then settle on lukewarm.
8. Add Shine
A little extra shine wonât help you get longer lasting hair color, but it will disguise fading color a lot better than dry hair. Use a shine spray or any other color safe products that give more shine to your tresses, and the color will look a lot more vibrant.
9. Limit Your Use of Hairspray
If you absolutely have to use a hairspray, make sure that itâs formulated for color treated hair. A shine enhancing hairspray is the obvious choice, because the regular kind will make your hair color look duller.
10. Use Hair Sunscreen
Last but not least, if you want to get longer lasting hair color, make sure that you protect it from UV radiation which fades color. A leave-in sun protector is a must if you plan on spending time outdoors without a hat.

About Diwali – Diwali also known as Deepavali and the “festival of lights”, is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year.
The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. Preparations and rituals typically extend over a five day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika.
In the Gregorian calendar, Diwali night falls between mid-October and mid-November.
If you don’t give your shampoo a second thought, think again. The right bottle can bring you the rich, shiny, healthy ‘do of your dreams.
1. How often should I shampoo?
There’s no harm in washing your hair every day, unless you start to see a lot of breakage. The evidence: lots of flyaways and little “baby hairs” at the crown. The entire wetting, drying, and styling process takes moisture out of your hair, so here’s a rule of thumb:
Wash every day if you have oily hair, live in a polluted city or humid environment, or work out daily.
Wash every other day if your hair is normal or combination (with dry ends and oily roots).
Wash every few days if your hair is on the dry side (this includes curly or color-treated hair) or if you live in a rural environment or dry climate.
2. Is it possible to use too much shampoo?
As long as you rinse it all out, you really can’t use too much. A dollop the size of a quarter is usually enough, but hair length is also a factor. Lather can be drying, but since it only sits in your hair a few minutes, it’s safe for all hair types.
3. What is the ideal water temperature?
Warm water will work up a nice lather and help dissolve the soap so that your hair rinses clean. Avoid really hot water, which can actually make your hair limp. For the final rinse, cold water is best â it will lock helpful ingredients into each strand and make hair look shinier.
4. It takes me a long time to use up a bottle of shampoo â does it expire?
Most shampoos have a shelf life of two to three years. A product that’s older won’t harm your hair, but it won’t be as effective. How to tell if your product is past its prime? Telltale signs are separation and/or a change in color or smell.
5. I need a shampoo that will protect my color. Does that mean I can’t also get shine and volume?
Absolutely not. Many shampoos that preserve color now include “bonus” ingredients to promote volume and shine (and to make curls look better). If that’s not enough for you, start a shampoo wardrobe. Make the color protector your basic, but use the others on alternate days to get different benefits.
6. How often should I use a deep-cleansing or clarifying shampoo?
If you use a lot of styling products, live in an area with mineral-rich water, or swim a lot, you should deep-cleanse or clarify twice a month. Oily types: It’s a good idea to use a daily clarifying shampoo every time you wash. For the rest of us: Use a clarifying, purifying, or chelating formula (which removes mineral residue) if your hair looks dull or has become resistant to your regular products. Mix one quarter cup white vinegar with one cup of water. Leave it on hair for one to two minutes after shampooing and conditioning, then rinse out.
7. Are costly salon shampoos better than drugstore kinds?
Shampoo is not one of those “you get what you pay for” products. How much you like a formula depends on your personal preferences (in terms of scent and texture) and how it works on your particular hair. A $5 shampoo may smell good to you and leave your hair looking terrific, while someone else may feel the same way about a $25 bottle. That said, there are a few facts to know: The big companies that create drugstore brands put a lot of money into research and new technology, but they can still keep prices low because they manufacture their products in mass quantities. Expensive shampoos have advantages of their own: In general, they’re gentler and contain a higher concentration of high-quality ingredients (e.g., a conditioner that penetrates deeper into each strand). And, yes, you do pay for packaging â but that’s true whether you’re shelling out $3 or $30. So focus not on the price tag but on finding a grime fighter that works for you.
8. When is it time to switch shampoos?
Sometimes the same bottle that’s always made your hair bouncy and shiny can leave it lackluster without warning. It’s a popular perception that shampoo suddenly stops working, but it’s not the shampoo that’s changed. Unless a product’s label alerts you to a “new” or “improved” formula, it’s the surface of your hair that’s different. But this doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t go back to your old favorite. If buildup is causing the problem, first clarify, then bring back your beloved bottle. No improvement? It may be time to switch for good. A simple self-test: Look at your nails. If they are ridged, peeling, or seem to break more easily, you’re experiencing the most common of all changes â aging, which leads to water loss in our cells and tissues. So while you’re still using your trusty oily-hair formula, your hair may be drier than it’s ever been. Buy a moisturizing version, or ask your stylist to diagnose your hair’s new needs.
9. Do I really need conditioner?
Conditioner is essential. It finishes what shampoo starts, in terms of making hair manageable and repairing problems like split ends. Everyone’s hair is damaged â the only question is how badly. You may go through many conditioners before you find the right one, but you’ll know when you’ve met your match. When your hair is properly conditioned, it holds a style better.
Growing healthier hair can be a concern for many people, and there are a few good tips and techniques people can use to better ensure healthy hair growth. One of the simplest ways someone can keep his or her hair healthy is to consider what is printed on the bottle of shampoo he or she buys, including the ingredients used in the shampoo and directions on how to wash the hair. Growing healthier hair can also be aided by someone not washing his or her hair every day, in most circumstances, and occasionally changing the shampoo and conditioner he or she uses.
There are a few different ways to help ensure healthier hair for someone concerned about follicle health, and most such tips are easy to follow. One of the first things a person should consider is the type of shampoo and conditioner he or she uses. While expensive shampoos and conditioners are not always necessary, someone should make an effort to buy high quality products whenever possible. This can help better ensure healthier hair by providing higher quality ingredients and more vitamins and nutrients needed for healthy hair.
Different types of vitamins can help in promoting healthier hair, including vitamin E and certain B vitamins. There are also some natural plants and herbs that may help a person grow healthier hair, including mint and rosemary. This is why such products are often included in shampoo and conditioner, not only for their pleasant aromas.
Someone should also try to follow the directions on how to best wash his or her hair provided with the shampoo he or she buys. Most shampoo makers will recommend a person washes his or her hair thoroughly, rinse out the shampoo, and then wash a second time. This is because the first application of shampoo may only serve to wash off built-up dirt and oils. A second application of shampoo can promote healthier hair because it will then apply any vitamins and nutrients in the shampoo to the hair itself.
Many hair stylists also recommend that a person not wash his or her hair every day to ensure healthier hair. For most people, daily washing will serve to strip hair of nutrients already provided by his or her body through natural oils. While some people working in certain conditions may need to wash their hair each day, for most people it is excessive and can damage hair in the long term. Many professionals also recommend that someone change the type of shampoo or conditioner he or she uses every six months to a year, to prevent buildup of ingredients in the shampoo itself on the scalp and hair.
Here’s some halloween inspo for those dressing up for the big occasion! Don’t forget to book your appointment to get your hair done for the scariest night of the year!
Just the other day I was reading how there are 2 types of people: those who spend tons of time and money on their Halloween costumes and the rest of us. And it got me thinking, can we look freakâish enough for Halloween without going though a prom-frenzy? Well I could. At least on some not-too-good-looking days. Iâd trick or treat the shit out of my neighbors. Anyway, back to easy to do looks for Halloween. Being that one night of the year when all is IN, and you could go as anybody or anything you wish, no wonder Halloween parties are not only fun to attend but fun to prepare for. Still, youâd want to be able to enjoy it, without worrying too much about that super hot mermaid costume you canât take 2 footsteps in without looking drunk. Or going as some vegetable that would not allow you to socialize or sit down⦠So I was thinking, the easiest thing to do is to focus on your head and face. In other words: makeup & hair. Well wigs actually. Wearing a wig on Halloween is, what? Too simple. Well yeah, but itâs a one year chance to experiment with crazy haircuts and colors without committing to them. You can go with the basics: blonde or brunette, short or long, or you can have fun with pink, red, green, neon wigs. Basically think of Lady Gaga or Katy Perry. They may get to wear them all the time, but since our un-Pop Star identity does not qualify us for wearing them to work, what better time have we got to not try them out! A bit of makeup, Halloween nails, some skeleton based jewelry and cool outfit and off you go to trick or treat.Â
A hair look Iâm totally obsessing over right now is the peroxide blonde or platinum blonde hair, somewhere between Marilyn Monroe & 70s bad girls. Ever since I saw this pic of Kate Moss going peroxide blonde with dark eyebrows and heavy dark makeup⦠Iâm hooked on this look. Sure most of these pics are celebs, editorials⦠but itâs worth the sneak peak for some Halloween inspo. How many times have you secretly wished to wear black or dark lipstick and get away with it. Hell, get compliments on it. Apart from those 90s days when the look was huge and much coveted, today, though itâs slightly making a comeback (the burgundy lips), itâs still not right down our street. Well on Halloween it can be. Or you can go for blue lipstick. If Rihanna can wear it to events, Iâm sure we can pull of this look on Halloween. For extra drama⦠false lashes, Now with these you can go as wild as you like: extra long, colored, fun, funky. And the best part about them is they go with any look you choose to have, adding more drama to it all. Ah⦠Halloween, the best excuse to dress and makeup as wicked and fun as you like, without the full commitment or the worry of what the rest will think. And donât forget the fangsâ¦
